About Compost

Composting is nature's way of recycling biodegradable waste and enables a 'closed-loop' approach to producing a rich source of organic matter for plants and crops. Our organic composts and soil improvers provide nutrients and enhance soil structure improving drainage characteristics along with air and water holding capabilities.

Recycled green and woody plant materials are aerobically composted at Biowise's composting site to produce a crumbly, soil-like product that is a good source of organic matter and can be beneficially applied to most soil types. Our composting process is subject to stringent monitoring and testing to ensure compliance with BSI PAS 100 and the Compost Quality Protocol. This assures the end user that the compost is produced to the highest safety, reliability and quality standards; for details please see WRAP’s Introduction to PAS 100:2005.

Benefits of Compost

The benefits of using compost include:

  • Improving the soil structure and creating a better root environment for plants
  • Increasing moisture infiltration and moisture holding capacity in lighter soils
  • Providing a variety of nutrients (some in slow release forms) often reducing the need for fertilisers
  • Providing organic matter to improve soil structure
  • Supplying beneficial bacteria which assist nutrient uptake and help suppress soil borne diseases
  • Improving plant health, from germination, through growth and to maturity
  • Improving resistance to soil compaction and erosion
  • Improving the control of weeds when coarse particle grades are used as a mulch
